Ebook About
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A brilliant storyteller, a master of sarcasm, and a hallucinatory stylist whose obsession with the impress of the past on the present binds him to Southern literary tradition.”The Boston Globe    Pat Conroy’s great success as a writer has always been intimately linked with the exploration of his family history. As the oldest of seven children who were dragged from military base to military base across the South, Pat bore witness to the often cruel and violent behavior of his father, Marine Corps fighter pilot Donald Patrick Conroy. While the publication of The Great Santini brought Pat much acclaim, the rift it caused brought even more attention, fracturing an already battered family. But as Pat tenderly chronicles here, even the oldest of wounds can heal. In the final years of Don Conroy’s life, the Santini unexpectedly refocused his ire to defend his son’s honor.   The Death of Santini is a heart-wrenching act of reckoning whose ultimate conclusion is that love can soften even the meanest of men, lending significance to the oft-quoted line from Pat’s novel The Prince of Tides: “In families there are no crimes beyond forgiveness.”   Praise for The Death of Santini   “A painful, lyrical, addictive read that [Pat Conroy’s] fans won’t want to miss.”People   “Conroy’s conviction pulls you fleetly through the book, as does the potency of his bond with his family, no matter their sins.”The New York Times Book Review   “Vital, large-hearted and often raucously funny.”The Washington Post   “Conroy writes athletically and beautifully, slicing through painful memories like a point guard splitting the defense.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune

Book The Death of Santini: The Story of a Father and His Son Review :

When the world lost Pat Conroy in 2016, it lost a treasure. I have long believed Conroy is the greatest of Southern contemporary writers. I have reveled over all his books from The Water Is Wide to The Prince of Tides to South of Broad, and all the works in between. But The Death of Santini, a memoir, was the death of me. I found Conroy’s lovely way with words intact, and I found myself laughing out loud in places. But this book, apparently was Conroy’s last attempt to make sense of his family, and dwelling, as it does, on his mother’s dying, his father’s death, his brother’s suicide, and his sister’s madness, I simply wanted to shout “enough already.” If we are to believe that his father was the brutal man his children say he was, then I simply could not believe they could love him and forgive him. And I know that we, as humans, are prone to love our parents no matter how badly they treat us. And I know that a tenet of most religions is love and forgiveness. But perhaps Conroy’s portrait of his father is flawed somehow or perhaps I’m just not as loving and forgiving as I should be. I did not like the man, no matter how many times Conroy showed us his wit, his curmudgeonly love he showed in his own way, and the shell of his earlier self he became eventually. Likewise, from what Conroy tells of his beloved grandmother Stanny, he never convinced me that she was the wonderful person he worshipped. I get, too, that his mother was a wounded soul, but I didn’t fall in love with her either. And I most particularly could not figure out why he didn’t avoid his sister Carol Anne like the plague, even when they were thrown together by the deaths of their parents. For me, this was a greatly flawed Pat Conroy book. I would invite re-reading any of the other books he wrote, but this one will sit on the shelf, completing my collection but never to be opened again. And that’s a shame, because I read it hoping for an infusion of the joy I have always found while reading one of my favorite authors.
As a Pat Conroy fan, The Death of Santini is a cool insight to the Conroy family and those who are familiar with Conroy's work, but for anyone else, it would most likely disappoint. Pat brings us all into the family circle as he looks back over his life and recollects on so much of what made the Conroy family what it was. Introduced to the world as the Meechum family, in the The Great Santini, The Death of Santini is Conroy's invitation to understand more of what brought his lifetime works, such as The Water Is Wide, The Great Santini, The Lords of Discipline and The Prince of Tides to fruition. It gives deep access within a family that was marred by an abusive father and delusional mother. He paints wonderful portraits of his family members and details the life-long struggles to make family work. We come to understand how a Southern boy rejected racism and still held a deep respect for all things Southern. He give us insight to his love-hate relationship with the military and what it means to be a military brat. This frank and revealing book of the Conroy family is proof that good things can often come out of bad, and it accounts how he and his abusive father found a relationship and understanding through so much turmoil and discord over the years. If you're a fan of Conroy, its a good read, but it often borders on the rantings of a man who is still deeply troubled by a tumultuous life he did not choose. As the final work of Pat Conroy, it is a befitting end to his literary career and an great insight into where his works came from.
